Making Polarizers (Extra Credit)

Materials and Methods
  • Elmer's Washable Glue (Blue Glue)
  • Iodine
  • Scotch Tape
  • Two hot irons
  • Scissors
  • CD cases

Procedure

  • Poured Elmer's Glue into small cd cases and allowed to dry overnight
  • Took scissors and cut into rectangular peices
  • Put dried glue between the two irons and stretched until a part of the rectangular glue became clear
  • Took a little bit of iodine and evenly distributed it over the clear part of the dried glue
  • Took small strip of Scotch Tape and taped it behind the opposite side of the iodine
  • Polarizer was made

Observations

  • Dried glue broke several times when strecthed between the two irons
  • Polarizer was brown and when turned, become black
  • When yellow iodine was painted onto the clear part of the glue, it turned brown
